Port Huron girls basketball hires Stacie Maier as coach

There’s a changing of the guard for the Port Huron girls basketball team.

The Big Reds recenbtly hired Stacie Maier as their next coach. She was an assistant with the team and also led the junior varsity squad for the past eight years.

“I’m very excited,” Maier said. “I’ve known some of the girls for quite some time. I’ve always enjoyed Port Huron, (while) not being from Port Huron. They were really accepting of me all those years ago. (Being a head coach) was always a goal of mine. So I’m just glad that it’s coming together.”

The Sandusky native replaces Becky Gilbert, who resigned last month after nine seasons at the helm.

Port Huron went 92-99 during Gilbert’s tenure and was 58-23 over the past four years. That stretch featured an unforgettable run in the 2019-20 season. The Big Reds finished 21-1 (20-0 in the regular season) and won their first MAC tournament championship.
