CRYSTAL FALLS — Scott Saari of the Wawonowin Country Club in Champion just missed winning his third Upper Peninsula Golf Association Senior Men’s Tournament title on Tuesday at Young’s Golf Course located between Iron River and Crystal Falls.

Saari, who won this title in 2018 at the Marquette Golf Club and in 2021 at North Shore Golf Club near Menominee, finished one stroke behind champion Joe Quinn of the Gladstone Golf Club.

Saari shot rounds of 75 on Monday and 77 Tuesday for 152, tying for runner-up just behind Quinn, who had 75 and 76 for 151.

Saari tied Larry Bratonia of Gladstone GC, who put together rounds of 76-76–152.

Saari came back from a 42 on his front nine in Tuesday’s second round, putting together 35 on the back nine to get as close as he did to the title.

Finishing fourth another stroke behind Saari and Bratonia was Jeff McCall of the Escanaba Country Club with 79-74–153, while in fifth was Mark Ray of Highland Golf Club near Escanaba with 79-76–155. McCall’s 74 was the best round Tuesday among the dozen golfers in the championship flight.

One other Marquette County golfer was reported to have participated, according to officials at Young’s. Steve Swentik of the Marquette Golf Club qualified for the first flight as there were 11 flights in addition to the championship flight. He shot 82-96–178 to place 11th in the flight, and had missed qualifying for the championship flight by just two strokes.

Marquette County golfers have had a good history of winning this tournament over the past two decades, according to information on the UPGA website, www.upga.org.

Wawonowin’s Dale Bayer won this title in 2012 at the Marquette GC and in 2013 at the Gladstone GC, while Ray O’Dea of Marquette GC took the title in 2009 when it was held at the Gogebic Country Club of Ironwood.

The UPGA lists several other major UP tournaments for later this summer, including the UP Ladies Golf Association Championship on July 18-21 at Riverside Country Club in Menominee and the UPGA Men’s — technically open — Championship from Aug. 11-14 at Pine Grove Country Club near Iron Mountain.
