Dragons honored as Region 1 tennis all-stars | News, Sports, Jobs

Warren’s boys tennis team was the undefeated Region 1 champion for the second straight season, and the District 10 Region 1 All-Stars are full of Dragons for the second straight season.

Junior Logan Fincher was elected Region Player of the Year for the second straight season. He’s 2-for-2 as the PIAA spring sports season canceled in 2020 — Fincher’s freshman year — due to COVID restrictions.

“It’s always nice to see the boys’ hard work pay off,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino, whose Dragons were 8-0 in the region.

The region all-stars and region players of the year were based on a vote of each region’s coaches.

“Logan Fincher is now a two-time region player of the year and has again gone undefeated in region play at the number one singles position, beating some high-quality opponents,” said Pellegrino. “Region player of the year and being named on the all-district team are well deserved for Logan. Being number one, you’re always playing the best of the best and he went out there and got the job done time and time again.”

In addition to Fincher on the region’s first team, Warren’s No. 2 singles player, senior Will Strassburg, was voted to the second team.

“Will Strassburg also went undefeated in region play at number two singles,” said Pellegrino. “Will would be the number one for every other team in the region and it showed with his dominant performances at the two slot this year. Will also had a few wins playing at the first singles position this season… Will is continuing his tennis career next season at Nazareth College.”

Warren’s doubles teams made up both positions on the first team.

“Both doubles pairs of (senior) Max Harrison and (junior) Mark Lynds and (junior) Owen Strandburg and (freshman) Adam Strandburg went undefeated in region play and were a force to be reckoned with,” said Pellegrino. “These pairs play very aggressive doubles and were the backbone of the team all season. The singles guys were able to go into every match with the confidence that our doubles would be able to win us two points, which takes some pressure off of them.

“Travis and I are very proud of what our boys accomplished this season,” said Pellegrino. “I’d also like to mention Abe Wolf, who is somehow not named on this list. Abe played (number) three singles for us this season and also went undefeated in the region play. Abe had some big moments for us this season and we are very excited to have him back for two more seasons. Expect to see his name on this list the next two seasons.”
