CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — University of Texas sophomores Kylie Collins and Peyton Stearns earned straight-set wins in the Round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championships on Tuesday afternoon at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. Stearns and freshman Allura Zamarripa added a straight-set victory in the Round of 32 on Tuesday evening at the NCAA Doubles Championships.
No. 49 Collins registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 32 Carolyn Campana of Wake Forest, while No. 2 seed Stearns followed with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory against Stanford’s No. 23 Alexandra Yepifanova. The No. 11-ranked duo of Stearns and Zamarripa later claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over the No. 19-ranked tandem of Angelica Blake and Connie Ma of Stanford.
With her win, Collins automatically earns ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Singles All-America honors. Stearns previously qualified for ITA Singles All-America honors for the second-straight season by virtue of her No. 2 seed at the NCAA Singles Championship. The criteria for ITA All-America honors for singles include earning a top 16 seeds into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship, or finishing in the top 20 of the final ITA Singles rankings.
After trading five consecutive service breaks to open their match, Collins held a 3-2 advantage against Campana. Collins held serve in the following game, earned another service break and held serve again to close out the 6-2 first-set win. She broke Campana on a deuce point in the opening game of the second set and held serve to take a 2-0 lead. After Campana held serve, Collins held serve on a deuce point and followed with a service break on a deuce point to build a 4-1 cushion. Campana responded by breaking Collins on a deuce point and held serve to trim the margin to 4-3. Collins held serve and closed out the match with a service break. Collins improved to 27-10 overall in singles play this season and will face No. 55 Fiona Crawley of North Carolina on Wednesday, May 25 in the Round of 16 at 1 pm Central.
After trading three-straight service breaks to open their match, Yepifanova had a 2-1 lead over Stearns. Yepifanova held serve on a deuce point and broke Stearns again to build a 4-1 cushion. Stearns responded with a service break at-love in the following game, held serve and broke Yepifanova again to even the set at 4-4. Yepifanova gained with a service break to take a 5-4 advantage. Trailing 30-40 in the following game, Stearns saved two set points and claimed a service break on a deuce point to pull even at 5-5. She then held serve and earned another service break to finish out the 7-5 first-set win.
Stearns jumped out to a 3-1 cushion in the second set, but Yepifanova broke Stearns, held serve and broke Stearns again to take a 4-3 lead. Stearns earned a service break on a deuce point to even the set at 4-4, before Yepifanova broke Stearns to grab a 5-4 advantage. Trailing 15-40 in the following game, Stearns rallied to save three set points and claimed a service break on a deuce point to pull even at 5-5. After Stearns held serve, Yepifanova held serve on a deuce point to send the set into a tiebreaker. Tied at 4-4 in the breaker, Stearns won the next three points to close out her victory. Stearns moved to 29-2 overall in singles play this season and will face No. 30 Elizabeth Scotty on Wednesday, May 25 in the Round of 16 at 1 pm Central.
In doubles action on Tuesday evening, Stearns and Zamarripa jumped out to a 4-1 lead in their opening set. Blake and Ma answered with a service break on a deuce point and held serve to trim the margin to 4-3. Both pairs held serve in the next two games, before Stearns and Zamarripa held serve again to close out the 6-4 first-set win. Tied at 1-1 in the second set, Stearns and Zamarripa claimed a service break on a deuce point and followed by holding serve to build a 3-1 cushion. After Blake and Ma held serve to make it 3-2, Stearns and Zamarripa held serve, broke the Stanford pair and held serve again to finish the match. Stearns and Zamarripa improved to 12-3 overall in doubles this season and will face No. 21 Daria Kuczer and Tenika McGiffin of Tennessee on Wednesday, May 25 in the Round of 16 at 8 pm Central.
