SAN FRANCESCO – University of Utah’s former lacrosse student-athlete Josh Stout and former gymnast Sydney Soloski have been selected as recipients of the 2021-22 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal, the conference office announced Wednesday. Stout becomes the first lacrosse student-athlete to be selected for the award, while Soloski is the sixth gymnast to earn the honor at Utah.
The Tom Hansen Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship athletics and leadership.
Stout wrapped up his career as a Ute as the all-time leader in career goals (74) and points (105), also ranking second in career assists (31). He graduated from the U. with a degree in nursing in 2020, forgoing the 2020-21 season to serve as a full-time nurse during the pandemic.
He made his return to college athletics with a final year of eligibility in 2021-22 while continuing to work shifts as a nurse during the season. The eight-time Dean’s List and five-time AD Honor Roll selection helped the Utes to the best season in program history in 2022 with a 10-4 overall record and the ASUN regular season title.
Soloski finished her illustrious career as a five-time All-American on the floor exercise, as well as a three-time All-Pac-12 performer on floor. The Calgary, Alberta native was the 2021 Pac-12 Floor Co-Champion and carried 18 career victories, which included 17 wins on floor. Soloski was a two-time Pac-12 Specialist of the Week during her five-year career with the Red Rocks and hit 87-90 career routines. She scored a career-best 9.975 on floor on four occasions, while also recording career bests of a 9.875 on vault and beam.
Soloski graduated from Utah as a double-major in finance and marketing. The three-time team captain for the Utes was a three-time WCGA Scholastic All-American and four-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection. She helped guide the team to three consecutive Pac-12 Regular Season Championships, back-to-back Pac-12 Championships, two Final Four appearances and a Super Six berth during her career.
Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.
