Birmingham Little League All-Stars win Junior Baseball championship

“Birmingham did the unthinkable,” is what coach Kevin Kovachevich had to say.

And even that might be an understatement because it’s unlikely the Birmingham Junior Baseball All-Stars team could’ve won a state championship in a more-improbable fashion.

They had just nine players because some Bulldogs were on vacation or taking care of their responsibilities with other travel teams.

They didn’t play a single district game because the two teams in their pool, Commerce and Rochester, backed out. So they advanced to the July 26 state tournament without any warm-up games, which put them at a disadvantage.

And as soon as they got there, they ran into an absolute buzzsaw, losing to the host Grand Rapids Western Little League All-Stars by 11 runs.
