Volleyball Adds Hasz And Larregui Lopez For 2022 Season

Eastern Illinois volleyball will report to fall camp this weekend with the 2022 season opener set for Saturday, Aug. 20 with a home exhibition match against Missouri St. Louis. Third year head coach Sarah Thomas has added several new faces to the Panthers line-up as they get set to return to the court.

Set to join EIU this fall are outside hitter Giovana Larregui Lopez and setter/opposite hitter Sylvia Hasz.

On the court she finished second in the nation in service aces per set and fourth in the NAIA ranks in total service aces. A first team All -Sun Conference selection, Larregui Lopez was second in the league in kills (196) and ranked 10th in the NAIA in kills per set at 4.02. She was twice named the team MVP after also earning All-Region and All-Conference honors during the COVID shortened 2020 season. A native of Puerto Rico, she attended The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida as a prep player earning All-Tournament honors as she led her team to the 2016 NACA High School National Championship.

“Giovana brings an upperclassman experience to our squad. Her incredible versatility as a six rotation outside and arm strength will be a difference maker as a point scorer and aggressive server. I look forward to coaching her these last two seasons,” said Thomas.

Hasz (6’0″) is from Rochelle, Illinois playing at Rochelle Township High School and club volleyball for VC United. She was a three time All-Interstate Eight Conference selection setting the school single season and career records for kills, digs and service aces. “Sylvia’s location and precision on the court and height adds much depth to our setting position. Her coachability and eagerness to learn and improve allows her ceiling to be high and exciting to coach,” said Thomas.
