Brian Williams, Rich Moscowitz take top honors at Ulster County Senior Men’s Golf Championship – Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, NY — Brian Williams and Rich Moscowitz were the two big winners in Thursday’s 70th annual Ulster County Senior Men’s Golf
Championship at Wiltwyck Golf Club.

Their histories in the county tournament are very different, however.

Williams claimed his first overall championship in just his second attempt. Meanwhile, the victory was old hat for Moscowitz, who added the Super Senior category (age 75 and older) to his resume after winning the other senior divisions over the years.

A field of 67 golfers survived sweltering temperatures that reached the mid-90s late in their rounds.

Williams, 51, a special education teacher at Kingston High, posted a 4-over-par 76 from the white tees (6,074 yards) and was crowned the overall champion. He won in a match of cards over former Ulster County Executive Mike Hein and Andy Occhi, who both had 76s.

Moscowitz, 78, a well-known area orthopedic surgeon, fired a 4-over 76 from the 5,675-yard red tees to fend off all challengers in the 75-and-over age group.

Williams, who estimated that he has finished in the top 20 of the Ulster County Men’s Amateur Golf Championship (The Herdegen) more than a dozen times, was elated to win the county senior tournament.

“It’s a nice honor,” Williams said. “It’s a great tournament and it’s a great group of guys to play with. It was a lot of fun.”

Williams had birdies on the fourth, 10th and 12th holes. Starting on No. 2 in the shotgun start, the left-handed Williams finished his round with a double bogey on the par-4 first hole.

“I was a little disappointed in that,” Williams said. “But overall, it was a good round. I made some putts. I didn’t hit the ball great, but my short game carried me through.”

Over the years, Moscowitz has won age groups in his 50s, 60s and 70s during his long and illustrious golfing career. This was his first Super Senior title for the former club champion at Wiltwyck. He said the highlight of his career in the county senior tournament came when he shot a 3-under 69 at the former Rondout Country Club in 2011 to match the late Bill Odeneal’s 69 in the senior event, which came at the par-70 Woodstock Golf Club in 1978.

“I’ve enjoyed this tournament because it’s thrilling for a lot of these older people to understand that they can still do it,” Moscowitz said. “Yes, it’s a different level. But what makes it great is you can continue to golf in a competitive manner all your life.”

Moscowitz said he hit the ball well the entire round, but he couldn’t capitalize on most of his birdie opportunities. “I only had one birdie, but everything else was basically par, par, par,” he said. “Tee to green I really played well.”

In addition to Williams winning Class C (ages 50-59) low gross with a 76, three-time Herdegen champion Tom O’Brien took low gross in Class B (60-69) with a 9-over 81 from the white tees.

In the net competition, Class A (70 and over) was won by James Mitchell with a 63, Class B went to John Lowry with a 69 and Occhi took Class C with a 72. Ben Fox of Saugerties High was awarded the senior association’s scholarship for 2022.
