Challenging Non-Patriot League Slate Awaits Volleyball Team

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The 2022 Navy volleyball team’s pre-league schedule features the Mids competing in three tournaments where they will face teams such as Maryland, Michigan State and Notre Dame.

Maryland Invite – August 26-27 (College Park, Md.)
Florida Gulf Coast (27-6, 15-1 ASUN in 2021)
• The Eagles won the 2021 ASUN Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
• This will be the first meeting between Navy and FGCU.
Maryland (19-13, 7-13 Big Ten)
• Seven of the 13 Big Ten losses suffered by the Terrapins last year came to nationally-ranked teams. The Terrapins also recorded a victory over then-No. 2 Wisconsin.
• Navy and Maryland last met in 2015, and the teams last squared off in College Park in 2001.
Rhode Island (13-19, 5-11 Atlantic 10)
• Navy and Rhode Island have met on four previous occasions, but not since the 1980 season.

Kristen Dickmann Invite – Sept. 1-3 (Annapolis, Md.)
VCU (18-12, 13-3 Atlantic 10)
• The Rams were the No. 2 seed in the A10 Conference Tournament last year, but were upset in the semifinals by No. 6 Fordham.
• Navy and VCU have not met since 1996 and have not played a match against one another on The Yard since 1991.
Michigan State (11-18, 4-16 Big Ten)
• Nine of MSU’s 16 Big Ten losses were to nationally-ranked teams. The Spartans also won a match last season at then-No. 7 Purdue.
• The match will be the first between Navy and Michigan State.
UAlbany (14-15, 8-4 America East)
• The Great Danes advanced to the championship match of last year’s America East Conference Tournament where they won the first two sets but eventually lost to top-seeded UMBC.
• The lone prior match in the series took place during the 2002 Navy-hosted Trident Classic.

Quest for the Crown – Sept. 8-10 (Norfolk, Va.)
Old Dominion (13-13, 5-7 Conference USA [ODU is now a member of the Sun Belt Conference])
• This will be the first match between the teams.
East Carolina (9-20, 5-15 American Athletic Conference)
• When Navy and ECU last met in 2016, it was the first match in the series in 20 years.
Notre Dame (13-15, 10-8 Atlantic Coast Conference)
• Six of Notre Dame’s losses last year were to teams ranked no lower than fourth in the country. This included three losses to the nation’s No. 1 ranked team.
• Navy and Notre Dame will be playing the inaugural match in the series.

Additional Notes
• Michigan State will be the fifth team to play a match in Annapolis as a member of the Big Ten Conference (Minnesota, 1998, 2009; Maryland, 2015; Michigan, 2021; Michigan State, 2022).
• The matches against Maryland and Michigan State bring the total number of matches by Navy against Big Ten teams over the last four fall campaigns to seven (2018: Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan [NCAA Tournament]; 2019: Michigan; 2021: Michigan; 2022: Maryland, Michigan State).
• Navy also has faced teams from the Big 12 (West Virginia, 2019, ’21) and SEC (Alabama, 2018, ’19) during recent fall seasons.
• Navy’s match against Notre Dame will be the first for the Mids against an ACC team since 2015 (Syracuse).
• Navy’s 2022 Patriot League season begins the weekend of Sept. 16-17 with matches at Holy Cross and Army (Star Match), respectively.
