Monmouth’s Sage claims Iowa 8-ball billiards title

MONMOUTH — First there was Ralph Greenleaf, who not only dominated the local pool scene in Monmouth but soon dominated the globe, winning 20 world titles in the first half of the 20th century.

Then there was Maynard “Rip” Parish, the best player to come out of Monmouth in the second half of the century. He’s alive and well in Pennsylvania and still a strong player.

Now, for the early 21st century, Monmouth’s champion of pool just might be John Sage.

Sage, who lives in Monmouth and turns 62 in June, had a championship weekend in March at an Iowa Operators of Music & Amusements state title event at the Waterloo Convention Center.
