SIUE Women’s Basketball Announces Two Transfers

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women’s basketball Head Coach Samantha Quigley Smith bolstered the 2022-23 roster with the addition of two transfer student-athletes.

Smith announced Friday that KK Rodriguez (St. Louis) and Molly Sheehan (Hinsdale, Illinois) will join the program. Rodriguez is a transfer from Tulsa while Sheehan arrives after previously competing for Valparaiso.

Rodriguez, a 5-foot, 6-inch guard, played three seasons at Tulsa, where she played in 67 games and earned nine starting assignments. She averaged 2.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game with two career double-figure scoring games. Her top offensive performance was 17 points with four steals, four assists, three rebounds and a block against Tulane in the first round of the 2020 American Championship.

KK Rodriguez will provide our group with great veteran experiences and a competitiveness that will elevate our daily work,” said Smith. “Not only that, KK is another area talent that we’ve loved to welcome home.”

A four-year letter winner from Webster Groves High School, Rodriguez led her team to 76 wins in her career. She averaged 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 steals as a senior and scored 1,579 career points (fifth all-time) at Webster Groves. An All-State honoree as well as three-time All-Conference and All-District performer, she was a McDonald’s All-America nominee as a senior.

Sheehan, a 5-8 guard, appeared in 20 games over the last two seasons at Valpo. Her debut with Valpo was seven minutes against Evansville where he hit her first career three-pointer as well as grabbing a rebound and a steal. She scored four three-pointers overall for Valparaiso coming off the bench.

“Molly Sheehan’s winning high school experiences at powerhouse Benet Academy and her gym rat mentality will also be a great addition,” noted Smith. “Her vision and scoring ability will add to our guard play.”

She earned honorable mention All-Area honors at Benet Academy after averaging six points and four assists per game while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the free throw line. Sheehan helped Benet Academy reach as high as No. 14 nationally and No. 1 in Illinois during the 2019-20 season after helping her team claim conference, regional and sectional championships en route to a fourth-place finish at the 2018-19 state championships.
