UNIVERSITY PARK – Erin Matyus has been named an associate head coach for Penn State swimming and diving, head coach Tim Murphy announced Tuesday. Matyus comes to Penn State after spending the last 11 years at Lehigh, including this past year as the associate head coach.
Murphy on Matyus: “I’m extremely excited to announce and welcome our new associate head coach Erin Matyus to the men and women’s swimming and diving program. Erin is a tremendous addition for our student athletes, coaching staff and entire team!”
Matyus on joining Penn State swimming and diving: “I am grateful to Coach Murphy for this incredible opportunity to join the Penn State program. He has put together a fantastic staff and strong team for us to work with and grow together. Penn State is a place with deep traditions and a bright future, and I couldn’t be more excited to get to Happy Valley and get to work!”
Matyu’s Bio: She was a coach for nine seasons overall at Lehigh. She coached Lehigh’s student-athletes through practices, meets and other training events while also playing a major role in student-athlete recruitment.
During her tenure, Matyus helped coach nine Patriot League Champions, 46 All-Patriot League selections (30 women, 23 men), four Olympic Trial qualifiers and 29 US Winter Nationals qualifiers.
Her first stint with the Mountain Hawks started in 2011 and ended following the 2016-17 season. Matyus re-joined the program during the 2019-20 campaign and earned the promotion to associate head coach during the 2021-22 season. She spent the two seasons away from the swimming and diving program as Assistant Director of Athletics Leadership at Lehigh.
The Liberty High School graduate spent two winters as an assistant coach for the Bethlehem YMCA where she worked with age group swimmers. She also served as an assistant coach for the Northwest Swim Club in Allentown, Pa. in the summer from 2002-2010.
Matyus competed in cross country and track and field for the University of Maryland after transferring from Colorado State where she redshirted as a freshman. She served as a team captain for the Terrapins, competing in cross country and distance running events.
Matyus earned degrees in Animal Science and Environmental Science from Maryland in 2010. She spent one season as an assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach at Moravian College and served as a volunteer swim coach at Liberty High School and volunteer assistant with Lehigh’s cross country program in the fall of 2011.
A four-sport athlete at Liberty, Matyus competed in cross country, track and field, swimming and soccer. Matyus held three school records in track and several others in swimming, where she was an All-American in the 200 and 400 yard free relay events.
