BALTIMORE, Md. (July 18, 2022) — The Morgan State bowling team was recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) as one of 52 programs to earn NTCA All-Academic Team honors, as announced in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Morgan State also had three bowlers, Aliya Adams, Ashanti Fernandesduck Natalia Miranda Vega named to this year’s NTCA All-Academic scholar-athletes list.

“Being a student-athlete in our sport requires a lot from each individual given the amount of travel days away from campus for the majority of the academic year,” said Morgan State head coach Tom Falbo. “I’m proud of all of our ladies. Aliya, Natalia and Ashanti are to be commended for such an amazing academic year given they are taking their higher level courses as juniors and seniors. Outstanding performance by the three of them.”

Annually, the NTCA recognizes programs that have excelled in the classroom. To be recognized, a program must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher for the academic school year.

Last year, Morgan State topped the list of 59 bowling programs with an impressive team GPA of 3,840. This season Delaware State (3,830) took home highest GPA honors, while Youngstown State (3,795) and Prairie View A&M (3,771) finished second and third, respectively. Long Island (3,760) and Monmouth (3,743) rounded out this year’s top five.

Along with Delaware State, the Lady Bears were one of six Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams to be honored by the NTCA: Monmouth (3,743), Maryland Eastern Shore (3,430), Alabama Birmingham (3,230) and Coppin State (3,200) ).

Each season the NTCA also recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom. To be recognized, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic school year.

Adams, Fernandes and Vega were among this year’s 397 honorees, up from last year’s 385 total.

In March, the three received MEAC Bowling All-Academic honors. Vega was also named the individual sport winner for the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards in April.
