CAA Tennis Champions Add Four Recruits


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men’s tennis team racked up its eighth Colonial Athletic Association championship last spring and will add four key newcomers as the Seahawks defend their title in 2022-23.

The Seahawks have signed Camilo Cano (Armenia, Colombia), Bryson Cook (Sewickley, Pa.), Alex DeGabriele (Naxxar, Malta) and Juan Jose Vargas (North Santander, Colombia) to complete the roster for the upcoming season.

“This class represents a huge amount of international success and they all have demonstrated the kind of character and work ethic we like to see,” said UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois, the 2022 CAA Coach of the Year. “I think they will all bring something special to our program. We are extremely excited about the future.”

The Seahawks have captured eight CAA titles and made nine NCAA appearances since DuBois overhauled the program in 2007-08.

Camilo Cano | 5-9, 145, Freshman | Armenia, Colombia
Achieved ITF World Junior Ranking of #104…Currently ranked No. 2 in Colombia in U18s…Owns four ITF doubles titles…Hails from same hometown as Seahawk men’s tennis alum Andres Torres…DuBois on Cano: “Camilo has really impressed us with his trajectory over the past few years. He has posted one of the fastest ascensions in the World Junior Tennis Rankings, moving from over 2,000 to #104 in a short period of time. He plays a very aggressive style and has huge potential.”

Bryson Cook | 6-0, 145, Freshman | Sewickley, Pa.
Ranked as 4-star recruit by Tennisrecruiting.net…Ranked as high as #144 Nationally…Has been ranked No. 1 in Pennsylvania…DuBois on Cook: “Bryson has been training full-time at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. His coaches all spoke very highly of him and his work ethic. In the recruiting process, his excitement for what we are trying to build here really came across.”

Alex DeGabriele | 6-0, 145, Freshman | Naxxar, Malta
Ranked as high as 471 in ITF Junior World Rankings…Top ranked junior from Malta…Malta junior champion at all levels from U10 to U18…ITF Junior G4 doubles champion in Cyprus…Represented Malta in Junior and Men’s Davis Cup…DuBois on DeGabriele: “Alex’s passion for playing at the highest level really came across through the recruiting process. You can see by his tournament and travel schedule that he is 100 percent committed. We believe his future is very bright.”

Juan Jose Vargas | 6-1, 175, Sophomore | North Santander, Colombia
Transfer from East Tennessee State…Played one season for Buccaneers in Johnson City, Tenn…Recorded 7-6 singles record, including 3-1 mark in spring dual matches…Went 4-1 in doubles during spring…Had two doubles-clinching wins… Played tennis at Colegio Calasanz Cucuta…Achieved No. 1 Colombian ranking in 2018-19…Ranked No. 4 COSAT in 2019…Achieved high ITF World junior ranking of 241…Won two ITF doubles events… DuBois on Vargas: “Juanjo is bringing a year of experience playing with a very strong ETSU team following am exceptional junior tennis career. I think he will really enjoy our training environment and his experience will be a great addition. His coaches all spoke very highly of him and we are very excited about him joining us.”
