Croquet gains in popularity in Northeast Florida

Croquet is a sport that doesn’t necessarily come across as popular in most of the country. That is not the case in Northeast Florida.

In recent years croquet has experienced a growth with tournaments in the area being sanctioned by the US Croquet Association. The association is also hosting a tournament in Ponte Vedra in October as well as the Florida Regional in January.

In terms of getting more tournaments in the area, Bill Simmons has been one of the main people involved. Simmons is the founder of Northeast Florida Croquet Club, which was installed to help promote tournament play in Northeast Florida.

“Our main purpose is to get more of the clubs up in Northeast Florida involved,” Simmons said. “Many of the players here are good tournament players. About 10 percent of the players ranked in the top 100 are from Jacksonville.”
