Indoor Volleyball Adds Seven For 2022-23


WILMINGTON, NC – UNCW head volleyball coach Dottie Hampton has announced the additions of Caitlyn Callahan, Hannah Forbes, Noah Gaeta, Morgan Galligan, Emily Hanlon, Lilly Kirtley-Peyton spirit Sarah Thompson to the indoor program for the 2022 season.

“We are really excited for this incoming class,” said Hampton. “The mixture of youth and experience will complement our team well. We have depth in each position and will be able to diversify our offense easily. Each player has gifts and talents that blend in with what we have on our roster already and I am excited to see what we can accomplish this season.”
Callahan, Galligan and Hanlon will join the program as transfers while Forbes, Gaeta, Kirtley-Peyton and Thompson will be freshmen.

Callahan was a highly decorated middle hitter during her red-shirt freshman season at NCAA Division II Millersville. Callahan was honored as a D2CCA All-Atlantic Region honoree while earning All-PSAC first-team honors and was tabbed as the PSAC East Rookie of the Year. Callahan led the PSAC with 52 solo blocks and was second in total blocks with 129. Offensively, Callahan totaled 314 kills in a team-high 117 sets played.

Galligan comes to the UNCW program following two seasons at Hartford as a setter. In two seasons with the Hawks, Galligan played in 19 matches covering 64 sets. As a freshman in the spring of 2021, she recorded 15 digs in a limited schedule. As a sophomore, she moved into the setter position full-time and averaged 7.94 assists per set while also averaging 1.5 digs per set. She dished out a career-high 51 assists in a five-set win over Quinnipiac.

Hanlon attended Butte College and averaged .297 kills per set and started 23-of-24 matches for the Roadrunners. She attended Chico High School in Chico, Cali., where she started two seasons on the varsity. Hanlon was an all-conference selection her senior season for the Panthers.

Forbes is an in-state product from Pittsboro, NC She played for Northwood High School where she was an All-State and All-Conference performer her senior season. As a senior, Forbes totaled 507 kills and 360 digs as the Chargers reached the fourth round of the North Carolina 3A State tournament, the furthest the program had reached.

Gaeta is another in-state product, having played for West Rowan High School in the North Piedmont Conference at the 3A level. Gaeta was a three-year starter for the Falcons at setter and was an All-State, Region and Conference honoree. In her senior season with the Falcons, Gaeta had 923 assists and 235 digs. Here 1,747 career assists were a program record.

Kirtley-Peyton is a libero who played for Alabama Performance, a club originating in Birmingham, Ala. She was named to the Ultra Ankle/JVA Watchlist from 2019-22 and to the AVCA Under Armor Phenom List from 2020-22.

Thompson rounds out the 2022 newcomers and is an outside hitter from Virginia Beach, Va. Her older sister, Ashley, plays for both the indoor and beach volleyball programs at UNCW. Thompson started all four seasons with the Knights of Kellam High School and was a first-team All-State selection. In her senior season, she led the team with an average of 3.5 kills and set program records with a .350 hitting average and 4.1 digs per set. The Knights advanced to the 6A finals in 2021.
