PISCATAWAY, NJ – Coming off of a historic season for the program, Rutgers field hockey unveiled its 2022 fall schedule. The upcoming campaign features 17 regular season games overall, beginning on August 26 and featuring 11 home games and six away from home. The team has nine nonconference games (Duke, St. Joe’s, La Salle, UConn, Princeton, Delaware, James Madison, Monmouth and Syracuse) in addition to the eight-game Big Ten slate.
The schedule features eight games against teams that went to the NCAA Tournament last season, including two Final Four teams and last season’s NCAA Champion, Northwestern. 11 of the 17 teams on the slate were ranked in the last released NFHCA Coaches Poll last season.
The team will host two scrimmages to open up play, welcoming Rider (August 14) and Syracuse (August 20). The schedule begins with four straight home games (Duke, St. Joe’s, La Salle and UConn). The team will kick off the regular season with the “Battle on the Banks” tournament, featuring RU games against Duke (Friday) and St. Joe’s (Sunday), with a neutral site matchup between Duke and St. Joe’s on that Saturday.
Five of the first six games and eight of the first 10 games overall taking place at home. A New Jersey weekend (at Monmouth and then hosting rival Princeton) closes out an opening stretch against non-conference foes.
Big Ten Conference play begins on September 16 when the team takes its first trip out of state on the year to head to Michigan State. After hosting Delaware that Sunday, RU continues conference play by hosting Ohio State and Michigan to close out September. The Scarlet Knights take a trip to Indiana and Iowa next, followed by single-play weekends against Northwestern (home) and Maryland (away).
Rutgers will head to Syracuse on October 23. The regular season then concludes with two more home games, welcoming in Penn State, and then hosting James Madison for Senior Day on October 30.
The Big Ten Tournament will be hosted this season by Ohio State, which will be from November 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio. Last season’s Big Ten Tournament, hosted by Rutgers in Piscataway for the first time, drew record crowds, including 1,617 fans at the title game, the largest NCAA Field Hockey crowd of the season.
The 2022 fall schedule is subject to change, including dates, times and locations. Full television and streaming information will be announced at a later date.
Last season, the Scarlet Knights set a program record with 19 wins, 13 ranked wins, seven ranked road wins, six top-10 wins and six Big Ten wins. Rutgers won the Big Ten Tournament, claiming the first tournament championship for the athletic department. RU earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, winning its First Round game against Delaware, its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1986 to advance to the Elite Eight.
