KENT, Ohio — Kent State volleyball head coach Haley Eckerman announced the team’s 2022 schedule on Friday.
The Golden Flashes’ 29-match regular season slate features 12 home contests at the MAC Center. Fans will have their first opportunity to see the team in action at the annual Blue and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The regular season opens the following weekend with a trip to the JMU Invitational, where the Flashes will battle UAlbany, Robert Morris and James Madison. The host Colonials went 17-7 and finished with #55 RPI a season ago.
The home schedule begins by hosting the Kent State Invitational, which starts with the Flashes playing Southern Indiana on Friday, Sept. 2. The team will then play Cornell the morning of Saturday, Sept. 3 and close the home weekend against Oakland in a 7 pm contest.
“I’m really excited for our non-conference and conference schedule this year,” Eckerman said. “Each game is going to be a challenge for our team to focus on one match at a time, which in the long run helps us prepare to compete in our conference.”
Kent State will then take its final road trip of non-conference play and will be in action for three matches at the Marshall Invite, which also includes Charleston Southern and Murray State, on Sept. 9-10.
A home match against Cleveland State on Thursday, Sept. 15 and a trip to Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 16 will serve as final prep for the beginning of Mid-American Conference action.
“It’s great to get to play the tournament we are hosting but also in the matches with the two Horizon League teams that will allow family, friends and fans to cheer us on more often,” Eckerman noted regarding the matchups against the local Northeast Ohio rivals .
The Flashes will begin conference play by hosting Bowling Green on Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24. The 18-match MAC schedule consists of two matches against each of the other East Division schools, as well as Ball State and Toledo. The Flashes will play the remaining four West Division schools once.
Notable home contests include Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge matches against Akron on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15 and Senior Weekend against Toledo on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12.
The regular season will come to an end at Ohio on Wednesday, Nov. 16 with the MAC Tournament slated for Nov. 21-23 and will be hosted by the highest seeded team.
Kent State returns 10 letterwinners from last year’s team, including seven student-athletes entering their fourth or fifth season in the program.
