Flightline is 5-2 as post-hour drag hits BC Classic Future Wager

Undefeated 4-year-old Flight line closed the heavy, 5-2 favorite Sunday in the first pool of the pari-mutuel Breeders’ Cup Classic Future Wager, which went a half-hour longer than many bettors might have understood.

Chalk it up to a digital version of post-time drag.

There was conflicting information about the closing time for pool 1, which opened Friday at noon EDT. A Breeders’ Cup news release July 29 said betting would “conclude at 6 pm ET on Sunday, Aug. 7.” A subsequent release Wednesday said it “will close on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 pm ET.”

Published past performances from Brisnet, Daily Racing Form and Equibase all said the “pool closes at approximately 6:00 pm ET.”

Two displays on the official Breeders’ Cup website continued to show the 6 pm closing time even as questions were being asked Sunday during the extra half-hour of betting.

At least two advanced-deposit wagering platforms, NYRA Bets and Xpressbet, showed “0 MTP” (minutes to post) between 6:00 and 6:30. Then they finally showed the “OFF” label to indicate betting was closed. They apparently kept accepting wagers akin to a race experiencing post-time drag. That is the term often used at racetracks to refer to the time between the toteboard showing “0 MTP” and the actual opening of a starting gate.

“There was an inadvertent discrepancy in publicly stated closing times for the Breeders’ Cup Classic Future Wager,” the Breeders’ Cup said in a written statement late Sunday night. “As a result, the pool was kept open until the latest published time (so) as not to shut out any horseplayers. We apologize for any confusion caused to the betting public.”

The statement went on to say the futures attracted $205,349, “a 138 perfect increase in pool 1 wagering over the last Classic Future Wager conducted in 2018.”

Adding to the confusion, one ADW showed a different set of figures. Xpressbet said the total deal was $197,028 with $5,244 in bets, 2.7 percent, taken in the extra half-hour. The odds changed for 7 of 24 entries, most notably with Zandon shortening from 27-1 to 24-1.

The odds did not change for Flightline, the John Sadler stable star who held firm at 5-2 during most of the three betting days. The 4-for-4 colt by Tapit who won by six lengths in the June 11 running of the Met Mile (G1) has raced just that one time since Dec. 26. He is being trained up to a next start Sept. 3 in the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar.

Life Is Good, who won Saturday’s running of the Whitney (G1) at Saratoga, shortened from 10-1 Friday to close as the 6-1 second choice to win Nov. 5 at Keeneland.

Epicenter, who was second in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before winning last Saturday in the Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga, wound up at 7-1.

A second and final pari-mutuel future wager will be conducted through the same national betting platforms during the extended, Labor Day weekend. The latest Breeders’ Cup news release said it would run from Friday, Sept. 2, at noon EDT to Monday, Sept. 5 to 6 p.m

According to Xpressbet, these were the closing odds for pool 1 of the Breeders’ Cup Classic Future Wager, including handle, the morning line and trainers.
