Nebraska boys club volleyball team wins national championship


A Lincoln-based boys club volleyball team can call itself national champions. High Flyers competed in USA Volleyball’s Boys Junior National Championship in Las Vegas, winning 10 matches in four days to be crowned 18U national champions. The eight-member team, led by head coach Jack MacLean, displayed their championship banner, trophy and medals at Spikes Beach Bar & Grille in Lincoln on Monday. Max Matras, a rising senior at Papillion-La Vista South, had the match-winning ace that helped the High Flyers bring a national championship to Nebraska.William Brueggemann, an opposite hitter from Hebron, was named MVP and made the all-tournament team. Teammates Cam Daniels, Liam Lutz and Callen Lane also earned all-tournament team honors. High Flyers, which was established in 2004 by Greg and Nancy MacLean, has been recruiting boys in-state and across the Midwest for years to come play for the team .With Nebraska being a girls volleyball dominant state, the High Flyers hope their victory will encourage more boys to try out the sport and help grow the game.
