Ohio Men’s Basketball Wraps Up Days Six and Seven in Spain

MADRID – The Ohio men’s basketball team continued its journey through Spain over the last few days, wrapping up its stay in Barcelona and arriving in Madrid for their second of three games.

After a free day in Barcelona on Saturday, Ohio boarded the bullet train and also the two-and-a-half-hour journey to Madrid, arriving Sunday afternoon. After arrival and a quick lunch, Ohio boarded the bus for a bus and walking tour of Madrid, seeing some of the Old Town and visiting Mercado de San Miquel.

On Monday, the Bobcats took a quick tour of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the home of the 2021-22 Champions League champions, Real Madrid. Following the tour, Ohio headed to the gym for their second game against Spain Select, a team comprised of Spanish professional players.

The Bobcats opened the game on fire, taking an early 13-2 lead over the first four minutes of the first quarter. Spain Select got in a rhythm out of the timeout, however the Bobcats were able to take a 22-19 lead after the first quarter. Spain Select was able to erase Ohio’s lead, at one point taking a 10-lead. The Bobcats were able to capitalize on some offensive rebounds near the end of the second quarter, cutting the Spain Select lead to 49-45 going into the half.

The Bobcats opened the second half with four straight points to tie the game at 49-49. Spain Select then took an eight-point lead with six minutes to go before forced turnovers and a three from the senior guard Miles Brown (Rochester, NY) cut the lead to 60-59, forcing Spain Select to call a timeout. The Bobcats kept battling, taking a 65-62 lead before Spain selected took a one-point lead. However, a dunk by freshman Aidan Hadaway (Lafayette, Ga.) at the end of the third quarter tied the game at 69-69 with 10 minutes to play. Spain Select retook the lead at the start of the fourth, but Ohio was able to cut the lead back to one with five minutes to go. After Spain Select took a four-point lead with two minutes to go, the Bobcats were never able to get over the hump, falling 92-64.

Overalls, freshman AJ Brown (Orlando, Fla.) finished with 19 points and five rebounds, while AJ Clayton (Roseville, Ohio) added 11 points, followed by 12 points from Miles Brown. Freshman Elmore James (Columbus, Ohio) added nine points, while junior Jaylin Hunter (Manchester, Conn.) grabbed seven boards.

Ohio plays its final game tomorrow (Aug. 9) before heading back to the United States on Thursday.
