Payne Haas, contract, rugby union, Brisbane Broncos, transfers, Gorden Tallis

Gorden Tallis doesn’t believe Payne Haas or any other front-rower in the game can command $1 million a season because they don’t change the result of games.

Tallis also doubts Haas’ suitability for a switch to rugby union amid reports he is being shopped to European rugby clubs by his management.

Tallis is growing tired of Haas’ contract talks and believes they are taking the focus away from Brisbane’s premiership push.

“I’m a bit over hearing it, like we heard at the beginning of the year he got booed and he didn’t like that feeling,” Tallis said on NRL 360.

“It keeps on popping its head up. He could have put it to rest and said, no I’m staying here, but he goes no, Europe would be nice.

“He keeps on dangling the carrot out. I think it is really poor timing with where the Broncos are now going into a finals series.”

Tallis believes Haas is the best front-rower in the game, but million dollar contracts should be reserved for players who can change losses into wins for their team on a regular basis.

“I don’t think a front-rower is worth a million dollars,” Tallis said.

“I believe your million dollar player has to change the result.

“Is he a great player? Yes. Is he the best front-rower in the game? Probably yes.

“I wouldn’t pay any front-rower $1 million because they don’t change the result.

“Yeah they dictate, but when he is not playing, Carrigan and Flegler and those guys pick up the slack and they do the job.”

Tallis believes Haas’ form has been down this season and noted the Broncos still won the wooden spoon when he was at the peak of his powers in 2020.

“Payne Haas was unbelievable last year,” Tallis said.

“Brisbane were in the bottom four sides. The year before he was outstanding. The last two years he has been the premier front-rower.

“This year I don’t think he has played as well as the last couple of years.

“They got the wooden spoon in 2020, so he doesn’t change the result.”

Tallis also criticized Haas for not ending the speculation about a move to rugby union and doubted he could make a successful code switch because he doesn’t have a position in the 15-man code.

“He said it is the first he has heard of rugby union, that was his comment, so maybe his management is doing it, but he can put it to bed,” Tallis said.

“He is the boss.

“Plus there is no position for him in rugby. He is not Sonny Bill Williams.

“He is a rugby league player. It would be like signing Shane Webcke. He is a great front-rower, but he has got no position in rugby union.

“There are some great players in our game that have no position in theirs.”
