Rutgers football vs. Temple live updates, scores, predictions

PHILADELPHIA − It’s only Rutgers’ third game of the season, but today’s contest against Temple holds plenty of importance.

For one thing, it’s the Scarlet Knights’ last non-conference game. That means another victory would secure a perfect record heading into the start of Big Ten play, a good spot for them to be ahead of a gauntlet.

And second?

History might be about to occur.

Greg Schiano is one win away from his 79th career victory, meaning he would pass Frank Burns for most in program history. It would be a considerable achievement for Schiano, who is in his 14th season overall.

Temple is standing in the way of all that happening when the teams play today at Lincoln Financial Field at 2 pm

The Owls, under first-year coach Stan Drayton, are 1-1 after losing to Duke and beating Lafayette.

The Scarlet Knights blew Temple out in last season’s opener in Piscataway, but Schiano said earlier this week that score largely resulted from takeaways − his team had five of them.

Few things to keep in mind today:

  • Expect Gavin Wimsatt and Evan Simon both to play at quarterback today. Schiano’s made it clear that the team isn’t at the point that it wants to go with just one and will do whatever it takes to win. He said they’re both growing considerably, but he’s going to let this process play out.
  • It remains to be seen whether running back Aaron Young and tight end Matt Alaimo will play. Same with quarterback Noah Vedral. All are considered “week to week” with injuries.
  • EJ Warner might be supplanting D’Wan Mathis as Temple’s starting quarterback. Warner is a true freshman and the son of Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. Schiano said Warner’s accuracy and knowledge of the offense stood out.
  • Keep in mind if you’re watching at home: The game is ONLY being streamed on ESPN+. It is not on traditional television.
