Gambier, Ohio – The Washington and Lee men’s tennis program opened up play at the Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 17) and Sunday (Sept. 18). The Generals opened play on Saturday with an 8-8 record in singles and a 3-1 score in doubles. On day two the Generals finished 3-5 in singles and 4-4 in doubles.
Sophomore Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) claimed the first victory of the tournament for the Generals by taking down Nadim Motaghedi from Carnegie Mellon University, 7-5, 3-0. Fellow sophomore Will Kistler (Hilton Head, SC / Laurel Springs School) continued the winning on the second court over Rohan Bhat from Case Western Reserve University, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8. Both Kistler and Erb finished 1-1 on the day in singles play.
Senior Evan Brady (Glen Head, NY / Chaminade) finished the first day 0-2 after losses to Luis Platas (Kenyon) and Jacob Patterson (Denison). The Generals would get back on the winning track after junior Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) took down Ethan Green (Denison) 6-0, 6-2. Coleman finished 1-1 on the day.
The General’s sixth spot was taken by Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek). Hirshburg would also go 1-1 with a win over Camden French (Denison), 7-5, 6-1.
First year Jack Yeaman finished 2-0 after wins over Pranav from Case Western and Gonzalez from Kenyon.
In doubles play Coleman and Yeaman took a win over Foster and Naginski from Oberlin College, 8-4. Erb and Brady also took a win over a duo from Carnegie Mellon, 8-5. The General’s third doubles win came from Mateo Moss spirit Jonathan Molner who took down a duo from Case Western, 8-6.
In day two of the invitational, Brady opened the day with a win over Kenyon College 7-5, 6-4. The Generals next victory would come from Molner who took down Rukhaiyar (Kenyon), 6-1, 6-3. The Blue and White rounded out the singles portion of the day with a win by Hirshberg over Rohan (Case Western), 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. The Generals finished day two with a 3-5 record.
In duo action from the day, the Generals finished the day with a 4-4 duo mark. The Generals started the duo portion with a win by Moss and Molner over a duo from Case Western, 8-6.
The winning continued for Moss and Molner who put up another big victory for the Generals over a duo from John Carroll, 8-0. The duo finished perfect on the weekend, 3-0.
Erb and Brady picked up where they left off on day one picking up another big win over a duo from Case Western, 8-5. Kistler and Hirschberg rounded out the winning for the day with a win over another duo from Case Western, 8-7.
The Generals will return to action Saturday (Sept. 24) to take on Randolph-Macon in Lexington.
