Fans will get their first chance to see the University of Portland women’s and men’s basketball teams in person as the teams will host Purple and White Scrimmages on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Chiles Center. The event is free and open to the public with doors opening at 1:30 pm
The Pilot women will scrimmage from 2-3 pm and the men between 3:30-4:30 pm Both teams will be formally introduced between the two sessions.
Both teams are coming off successful 2021-22 seasons that included a combined 39 wins, including postseason victories.
Portland Pilots Women’s Basketball
The team finished 20-11 for their second 20-plus win season under head coach Michael Meek and their fifth as a Division I program. The Pilots placed fourth in the West Coast Conference and earned their third-straight postseason berth with an invitation to the WNIT. They advanced to the Round of 32 after earning their first home playoff victory and first WNIT win in program history over the Colorado State Rams.
The team returns its top four scorers and 11 total players from last season, including three-time All-WCC forward Alex Fowler and point guard Haylee Andrews. Center Lucy Cochrane led the NCAA in blocked shots last season, while Maisie Burnham averaged 11.0 points per game during conference play.
The Pilots will host Stanford, Washington State and Portland State, as well as a trip to Oregon, during a challenging non-conference schedule.
Portland Pilots Men’s Basketball
The Pilots are coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history under first-year head coach Shantay Legans. The team finished 19-15 overall and finished sixth in the WCC, recording their highest win total since 2010 and their fourth-highest total since joining Division I in 1958. Their 7-7 record in WCC play was also the best since 2015.
The Pilots return the top seven scorers and all major contributors to the roster for this season. Tyler Robertson (15.3 ppg) earned All-WCC Second Team honors last season, while Moses Wood (14.2 ppg) garnered honorable mention recognition. Chris Austin (14.3 ppg), Mike Meadows (10.2 ppg), Chika Nduka and Kristian Sjolund were also primary starters, while the team welcomes back graduate student Jack Perry from a medical redshirt.
Coach Legans brought in a talented recruiting class including four transfers and five freshmen. The team will play a challenging non-league schedule highlighted by co-hosting the Phil Knight Invitational and opening the tournament on Thanksgiving Day against North Carolina. Other notable non-league opponents include home games against Portland State and Seattle U and road contests at Oregon and Kent State.
Season tickets are now available for both teams with men’s prices starting at $145 and women’s season tickets for just $80.
