Rochester Adams captures first-ever girls county golf championship – The Oakland Press

AUBURN HILLS —‌ The Rochester Adams girls golf team has been in contention at the Oakland County Division 1 Golf Tournament in the past. But for one reason or another, the Highlanders couldn’t seal the deal.

But this 2022 team is different. It’s filled with difference-makers. And on Wednesday, the Highlanders left no doubt this year’s team is on a mission. Adams shot a 325 team score at Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills to capture the first girls county championship in school history.

“We’ve been close a couple of times. We finished second a couple of years ago, and had a third. We’ve been knocking on the door, but could never quite pull it off. There’s so much good golf in Oakland County. It’s not an easy thing to do,” head coach Jeff Kutschman said. “This is exciting. The girls have been here the last few years have wanted it and wanted it, but kept just missing out. They finished it today. I’m proud of them.”

Senior Grace Wang led the way, firing a 72 to earn her medalist honors. Her round included six birdies, including one on the 18th hole to secure the top spot. Teammate Laura Liu, a junior, shot a 74, good for a tie for fourth overall. Juniors Katie Fodale (84) and Olivia Dance (93) rounded out the scoring for the Highlanders.

South Lyon, which won the county title in 2020, finished runner-up. Senior Gabby Tapp had a 76 to pace her team. Kaylyn Wisniewski (81), Ellen Albert (83) and Lea Faust (91) also scored for the Lions.

“I think the girls played well in these conditions,” South Lyon head coach Dan Skatzka said. “Yeah, we’d always like to shoot a little better, but that doesn’t always happen. We had a bit of a jumbled lineup. We have some really close averages and I’m going to have to decide on who’s going to play in the regional.”

Rochester finished third with a 335, followed by Cranbrook (339) and Troy Athens (344) to round out the top five.

The top 10 individuals medaled, led by Wang. Troy’s Riley Hayden and Troy Athens’ Olivia Hemmila tied for second with rounds of 75. Also medaling were Liu, Rochester’s Madison Yang (76), Tapp, Marian’s Colleen Hand (77), Athens’ Ava Weeks (77), Farmington’s Venetia Chap ( 79) and St. Catherine’s Rachel Fay (80).

Next up for most teams will be regional play next week. Kutschman likes the way his team is playing, but knows his team will be challenged at the Oxford regional on Oct. 5.

“I think they’re all playing really well. Even though I think they’re playing well, they feel like they want to play better,” Kutschman said. “They think they can take it one more step further, that they can make one more shot. That’s how they’ve been all year.

“If you look at our region, there are 4-5-6 of the top 10 teams from the county tournament today that will be there with us. So the schedule doesn’t get any easier.”
